Case Study: From CFO to Accidental HR Leader – How isolved Turned One SMB Manager Into a Thriving HR & Payroll Organization

Introduction Many small and medium-sized businesses depend on their financial leaders to handle HR and other administrative tasks, regardless of their background and expertise. This includes roles like CEO, CFO, and Controller — often ones that have little experience or training in matters related to recruiting, hiring, and managing the workforce, yet oversee the company’s talent acquisition and management. In such situations, the workforce gets short shrift. HR-related issues receive only the time they require, not the time they need. Despite the manager’s best intentions, areas like engagement, workplace culture, and performance management fall by the wayside. Since spending time on HR means less time for budgeting, forecasting, taxes, and compliance, the manager’s core function suffers as well. This can hurt the company, especially as […]

Analyst Insight: From HR Burden to Business Growth – Why SMB CFOs Need Modern HR Solutions to Drive Workforce Strategy

For most small and mid-sized businesses, the idea of having a dedicated Human Resources department, let alone a full-time HR specialist, feels like a luxury. Budgets are tight, margins are slim, and every hire must contribute directly to growth or business operations. That’s certainly not ideal, but it is a reality that forces many business owners to assign HR-related tasks—like payroll, benefits administration, and compliance—to someone who’s already an employee, perhaps the CFO, a trusted financial manager, or even the office administrator. It makes sense: If someone’s already managing the likes of accounts payable, taxes, and budgets, why not have them process payroll and administer benefits as well? But there’s a rub: Such arrangements can burden those involved with responsibilities that are outside their training, […]

Analyst Insight: Accountants & Bankers – The Unexpected HR Allies Helping SMB Payroll and Compliance

Introduction For many small and mid-sized businesses, there’s no such thing as an “HR department.” Budgets are tight, margins are slim, and every hire must quickly and directly contribute to growth or business operations. Typically, SMBs handle HR in one of two ways. They may fold recruiting, benefits, performance management, and other related functions into a selected manager’s to-do list. Or they outsource HR to one of the company’s trusted advisors, like their bank or CPA. In those cases, the accountant who closes the books each month might handle payroll, track paid leave, and help the business owner analyze labor costs. The banker who sets up a line of credit may offer advice on employee benefits. That’s certainly not ideal, but it makes sense: If […]

Research Note: The Hidden Costs of Being the HR Hero – How SMBs Use isolved to Turn Compliance Headaches into Strategic Growth

Running the financial side of a small and mid-sized business (SMB) is complex enough, but adding workforce management, benefits, and compliance to the mix stretches capacity even thinner. For many SMBs, hiring a full-time HR professional is simply financially out of reach. It may then be a structural resource or workforce issue that makes HR underdeveloped, reactive, and disconnected from overall business results. As these businesses struggle to handle the increasing complexity of HR, payroll, and benefits management, these duties often fall to CFOs, controllers, or administrators who lack the time, resources, and expertise to manage the workforce strategically. When HR responsibilities are added to an existing role, it can seem unexpected since they weren’t part of the original job description or a focus of […]

#HRTechChat: Darwinbox’s Samrat Krishna on Killing the Toggle Tax and Unleashing AI Agents at Work

AI is changing the game—but not in the way you think. In this episode of #HRTechChat, we’re sharing a special swapcast from the PeopleTech podcast hosted by Mark Feffer, featuring Samrat Krishna of Darwinbox. Samrat unpacks how AI agents are killing the “toggle tax” and rethinking enterprise software altogether. Instead of juggling dozens of systems and interfaces, agents now act on your behalf—fetching info, taking action, and streamlining workflows across platforms. They dig into the mechanics of MCP (Modular Component Protocol), how Darwinbox is building for agent-first environments, and what HR leaders should automate today to unlock strategic headspace tomorrow. If you think AI is about replacing people, you’re asking the wrong question. Tune in to learn how to shift from assistance to agency—and why […]

Face It: ‘Efficiency’ and ‘Productivity’ Are Really About Downsizing

AI’s champions insist the technology will “change” jobs and “evolve” jobs, and as a result work will be more interesting and satisfying than it is today. Even if there’s a net loss in jobs in the near term, they say, the workforce is shrinking, so over the years the number of jobs eliminated will be relatively small and painless to the economy. But there’s a rub. These arguments ignore the natural tendency of business leaders to save money by eliminating workers. Whether they’re public or private, companies aim to “run lean” while keeping their operations “efficient” and “productive.” It’s true that the advent of automobiles and personal computers did more to change jobs than end them. That’s fine as long as you’re talking about efficiency […]

reworked: Choosing HR Software Involves More Than HR

Balancing focus and flexibility, navigating the suite versus point solution debate in HR tech. A question that regularly pops up as the technology environment evolves is: Which is the better approach for HR — to put all of its eggs in one basket by focusing on a single, comprehensive tech suite, or to address each requirement with a focused point solution, such as an ATS developed by one company, a performance management platform offered by another and a payroll system provided by a third? Point solutions and suites will always need to coexist, said Ward Christman, founder of HR Tech Advisor, an HR technology advisory firm in West Chester, Pa. “No suite will ever be sufficient for all customers, and will probably be insufficient for any […]

Case Study Vignette: How isolved Simplified Payroll for QSR Operator Leemar United

What You Need to Know Processing payroll is never easy, but it can be especially fraught when your workforce stretches across multiple states and changes jobs frequently. That’s the situation faced by many companies that run Quick Service Restaurants (QSRs). Primarily described as fast food outlets, these QSR chains face a number of common challenges, such as recruiting, hiring, and retention, while complying with the regulations of the different jurisdictions they serve. Among those companies is Leemar United Group, which operates 26 El Pollo Loco and Farmer Boys restaurants in California, Utah, and Colorado. Like others in the space, Leemar United heavily relies on technology, not only in addressing the details of the business but in its recruiting and workforce management, as well. Compliance is […]

Anatomy of a Decision Vignette: How isolved Strengthened the Onboarding and Payroll Experience for QSR Employees and Customers

What You Need to Know To most Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) customers, front-line workers are the business. Whether it’s by providing quality service or resolving customer issues, they’re the ones who maintain the customer experience. That involves everything from taking orders and maintaining facilities to troubleshooting delivery delays and making sure a customer’s request for “mayonnaise, not mustard” is fulfilled. It follows, then, that QSRs view the employee experience as critical. Because the industry’s wages tend to be low and vary little, workers will switch employers for a minimal raise, slightly better benefits, or a more professional working environment. Combine that with the importance of experience in dealing with the public as well as the business’s operations, and you begin to see why employee experience […]

Research Note: How isolved’s Industry Expertise Enables Quick Service Restaurants to Recruit and Engage an Ever-Changing Workforce

In high-turnover industries like quick service restaurants, employee experience can often be overlooked, as it’s merely a fleeting part of business operations. In the eyes of a busy business owner or restaurant operator, many employees are there one moment and gone the next. What business leaders miss, however, is that employees represent the most powerful resource at their disposal. When it comes to business operations, employees are the primary drivers of retention, performance, and customer satisfaction. For businesses that rely on regular, up-close interactions with their customers, employees are integral to the success of their business. Whether it’s a smile greeting them when they walk in the door, or seasoned professionals who know a menu from front to back, at quick service restaurants (QSRs), workers […]

Market Alert: ADP Closes Gaps and Expands Capabilities with WorkForce Software Acquisition

The News The October 2024 acquisition of WorkForce Software affords ADP the opportunity to expand its offerings in HR-related software, take advantage of a respected global support organization and strengthen its product suite even as it offers new capabilities to new and existing markets. On first glance, the transaction appears to position a big fish to down a smaller fish by combining product lines and employees. But in the month since the deal was announced, ADP has said little, if anything, about dramatic changes to its product development and product marketing efforts. If ADP has big changes in mind for either organization and its products, it’s being coy about them. WorkForce will operate as a unit of ADP, at least initially, and its customers can […]
