Decusoft Guest Blog Article: Compensation Planning: Where Complexity Meets Opportunity

The context Anyone leading a compensation team or function is keenly aware that ‘comp planning’ activities can take the most time, and surrounding complexities can be plentiful. This is largely due to featuring the most ‘what if’ iterations, and involving the most reviewers, approvers, and communications protocols, all governed by extreme data confidentiality and sensitivity. These aspects speak to process complexity, and that’s before we bring in many other dimensions. These include new or changing comp elements, eligibility rules, salary increases and total comp guidelines, and the processes needed for collecting, matching, and incorporating market pay rates. Additionally, adjustments to market data guidance might be necessary to reflect the pressing or urgent needs of a business, such as when internal/external skills shortages exist that require […]

Payroll's Inflection Point - Thumbial

Payroll’s Inflection Point

As the curtain closes on the 27th annual National Payroll Week, I felt it was a good opportunity to reflect on the current state of payroll and the future of the critical process and profession, which is reaching its much-needed inflection point. More importantly, to highlight why prioritizing the critical process and profession as a central element in the broader HCM strategy is vital to enabling organizational agility and elevating the profession from its simple processor stigma to a strategic advisor and center of expertise (COE). So close…yet still so far Payroll has come a long way from its stone tablet and paper journal roots. Tabulating machines must have seemed like the future in the late 1950s to the few organizations with access to them. […]

Payroll with Earned Wage Access - Thumbnail

Engaging the Human Side of Payroll with Earned Wage Access

With Missouri and Nevada, each passing legislation in recent weeks aimed at establishing standards for the earned wage access(EWA) industry that will ensure consumer protection, transparency, affordability, and inclusiveness for the financial wellness tool, I thought it was fitting to share a blog I wrote a year ago highlighting the human side of payroll and the impact of EWA on users and their organizations. While many employers have adopted and realized the positive impacts of offering employees modern digital pay methods like on-demand pay for earned wage access, many more are still holding out, often viewing these digital innovations as simple fads that will eventually go away. Surprisingly, payroll leaders and practitioners often drive the heaviest pushback to these innovations. Understandably so, given the compliance […]

Tips for Gaining Financial Security

14 Tips for Gaining Financial Security and Independence

I recently read that more than 64% of people in the United States alone are living paycheck-to-paycheck. That means that 64% of Americans are literally one flat tire away from being unable to pay their rent or their mortgage, and a layoff away from financial ruin. I’m fortunate to have developed financial savvy during my life, and while this is a bit of a departure for 3Sixty Insights, I wanted to share some advice to help others gain a level of security. Learning these fundamentals has given me the financial freedom to do things that those 64% of people couldn’t even fathom, like quit a job without a replacement lined up, or start a business. My hope is that by sharing what I have learned […]

#HRTechChat: Mike Ettling, Chief Executive Officer at Unit4

I’m going to date myself here. My first encounter with Mike Ettling, CEO of Unit4, was over 10 years ago. Technology editor for HRO Today at the time, I was relatively wet behind the ears, as the saying goes, when it comes to human capital management and the technology for it. I attended a briefing for analysts and the industry press with Mike, CEO at the time of what was then NorthgateArinso. The gathering was in real life, a.k.a. IRL (a term that had not even emerged yet). “Well, Brent, that goes back some time,” Mike said when I brought it up to open the discussion on this episode of the #HRTechChat video podcast. Much has happened since 2011. NGA became NGA Human Resources and, […]

3Sixty Insights Anatomy of a Decision

Anatomy of a Decision: Magnox Ltd. Makes the Decision to Migrate HCM and FP&A to the UNIT4 Cloud

What You Need to Know 3Sixty Insights spoke with a customer of Unit4 whose choice to continue their transformation by moving their human capital management (HCM) and financial planning and analysis (FP&A) tools to the cloud helps illustrate several emerging realities. Much of the need for HCM resides beyond HR’s traditional scope. HCM technology is at its best when integrated seamlessly with other domains of the enterprise. It provides deep companywide insights into the organization’s people data. This, in turn, furnishes leadership and line managers alike with the information they need to make real-time, informed decisions on staffing for optimal organizational resilience—e.g., workforce agility, financial control, cashflow management, reduction in staff turnover, right-fit talent for organizational growth, etc. People-centric organizations tend to have forward-thinking leaders […]

How to Effectively Debate Investment in HR Priorities with Your CFO

How to Effectively Debate Investment in HR Priorities with Your CFO

Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) have always been a friend of mine. Early in my career, I was the human resources business partner supporting the CFO at a global software development company with around 5,000 employees.  My role was partnering with the CFO and the leadership team, aligning around the business strategy, and leveraging the workforce to deliver on that strategy.  That included everything from recruiting, developing, and retaining talent. I worked on some very cool business priorities – restructuring to financial centers of excellence and transforming the business with technology.  What I learned from that experience is how to effectively negotiate for investment in talent strategies within the construct of the budget dollars and business strategy.  Thankful for that experience! Now as an industry analyst, […]

Analyzing M&A: OneSource Virtual’s Workday Deployment Business Acquired by Cognizant

For as many as 1,300 OneSource Virtual (OSV) customers, the announcement that Cognizant will buy its Workday professional services and consulting business is easily missed. Timing-wise, the acquisition was announced immediately following OSV quarter-end sales (Halloween) and just before politically charged mid-term elections. Moreover, Cognizant is still not a widely recognized brand in HR circles or within the Workday ecosystem despite its 2020 acquisition of long-standing Workday partner, Collaborative Solutions. What just happened? Press releases tell us that Cognizant has entered an agreement to acquire the professional services and application management practices of OneSource Virtual. In layperson’s terms, this is the technical deployment business that requires certified Workday professionals to configure and integrate Workday customers to go-live. It also includes the application management solutions (AMS) […]

Enterprise Risk’s Race to the Bottom: Sexy SAIDI

Cue this one up for today’s soundtrack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSk5U4oHhu0 Today I learned the statistical acronym SAIDI: System Average Interruption Duration Index. It’s the internationally recognized formula for calculating the average outage duration for each customer served by a utility, and it’s calculated by the expression: For those of you still PTSD’d from high school algebra and things containing letters from the Greek alphabet, in other words, it’s the sum of all the customer interruption durations divided by the total number of customers. Why should anyone care, do you ask? Following up on our recent examination of supply chain risk under-mitigation, have you or anyone else in your company investigated the impact to your business if, suddenly, employees’ mobile phones stopped working for any extended length of […]

Measuring the Impact of Just-In-Time

Measuring the Impact of Just-In-Time

In a perfect world, people do exactly what they’re paid to do. Trouble is, in an imperfect world, people also do exactly what they’re paid to do, but it isn’t quite the right thing. Compensation managers who design plans based on unquestioning loyalty to executive mandates can often be missing opportunity to be a better partner to the business. Case in point: Though they got the closing Biff Tannen quote wrong, (it’s “and get out of here”), this right here is chapter next in the seemingly never-ending saga of “Just In Time Too Often Isn’t.” When I first started out, I honed my airport-fu to the fine edge of a Shaolin sword. That is, until it dawned on me that “success” wasn’t about how many […]

Most recruitment tech today incorporates some form of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the human side of hiring. There’s AI for improving your applicant tracking system, engaging with candidates, and more. Yet the fundamentals of recruiting remain the same. For example, in spreading the word about your open positions, you still need to be as accurate as possible […]

3Sixty Insights #HRTechChat with Danny Schulz, Senior Manager of Payroll, Systems and Taxes at Kohler Co.

He means payroll becoming the star at Kohler Co., where Danny is senior manager of payroll, systems, and taxes. So, naturally, we sat down to discuss best practices in bringing order to global payroll — something Danny and his team are well on their way to achieving. Research Note: Clif Bar Steadily Improves Organizational Agility via Innovation in Payroll, Employee Mobility, and More With the Help of UKG

What You Need to Know As reported by Forbes magazine and strongly suggested by 3Sixty Insights’ investigation, the pandemic has shifted the focus from where employees work to how they work while eliminating borders between companies, people and countries (3Sixty Insights BWSRN2211 – “Choose Your Own Adventure: Returning to the Workplace, Protecting the Employee Experience,” January 2022). Employee mobility has become a competitive advantage and necessity for any employer currently operating internationally or hoping to do so. Ideally, the organization aspiring to install an operational framework to support a borderless workforce will marshal, potentially, a broad spectrum of software for human capital management (HCM). As mundane as they may be, however, tools to comply with a widely varying regulatory landscape, along with an efficient payroll […]

Market Alert: Immedis Gets Closer to Touchless Global Payroll With New Functionality and a Deepened Mobile Experience

What Happened Recent updates to global payroll outsourcer Immedis’ technology promise to simplify the user experience and further secure data for its customers and their employees. Employee self-service (ESS) in the mobile application, launched in Q1 2022, has been deepened. Additionally, the vendor has revised its process for gross-to-net (GTN) uploading, to support auto-validation, and streamlined the direct processing of payments. Background Immedis continues to strengthen its solution. 3Sixty Insights published an analysis in January 2022 of the vendor’s then-new analytics-related functionality and upgrades to the mobile ESS to match that of Immedis’ desktop application (3Sixty Insights 3SIMA2212 – “Immedis Delivers More Power to Users in Q1 2022 with New Functionality in Analytics and Mobile Self-Service,” January 2022). Some of the work then and now […]
