Many careers pages today seem to carry a badge: “Great Place To Work Certified.” But to the job market, what does it typically signal, and where does it fall short? As an analyst engaging with HR leaders, employees, and HR tech vendors, it seems like Great Place To Work certification is seen less as the sole indicator of a “good company” and more as part of a body of evidence that includes retention statistics, internal mobility metrics, cultural trends, and employee feedback initiatives. Taking a Closer Look Great Place To Work (GPTW) is a workplace culture consultancy that has spent over 30 years researching employee experience and positioning itself as a global authority on workplace culture. GPTW says more than 10,000 companies across 60 countries […]

Analyst Insight: The Fair Pay Gap – Perception, Reality, and the Growing Risk to Retention and Engagement
Payscale’s new Fair Pay Impact Report highlights an ongoing issue in the modern labor market: the growing gap between employee perceptions of fair pay and employers’ actual compensation benchmarks. The report presents compelling evidence that many employees perceive themselves as underpaid, even when their compensation meets or exceeds current market rates, leading to downstream impacts on retention, engagement, and performance. These findings reinforce the report’s argument that traditional communication strategies about pay fall short. According to Payscale, 68% of employees believe they are undercompensated despite earning wages at or above established market rates, up from 51% in 2021. These numbers have risen, even amongst a broader trend of rising salaries and enhanced transparency initiatives run by many employers. Among those employees reporting unfair pay, only […]

Research Note: Behavioral Intelligence in Hiring – How Fama Helps Identify Misconduct Before Day One
Executive Summary Today, nearly everyone has a visible online footprint. The average person voluntarily shares dozens of data points publicly online, sometimes with great detail. By evaluating this behavior, organizations gain insights into candidates’ cultural fit and potential risks for damaging behaviors, helping employers understand a candidate’s workplace impact before employment begins. The organizational impacts of even modest levels of employee misconduct are profound. With even a small rate of misconduct setting off a domino effect of consequences for productivity and talent retention, organizations in which just 5% of workers commit misconduct suffer a 40% reduction in productivity. These same organizations also risk losing their most valuable employees, who become 54% more likely to depart when these are the workplace conditions. Fama’s 2024 Misconduct Benchmark […]
Council Guest Post: What If Everyone Has a Seat at the Table and a Voice?
A thought experiment on the benefits and challenges of inclusive decision-making In recent years, I have been asked this question too frequently: “How can I create a seat at the table?” At first, this seemed like a normal question, but it has since made me think deeply. Why does this question even exist? I believe everyone has a seat at the table. Don’t they? Hence, the “What If” Question Imagine a workplace where everyone has a seat at the table and a voice in the decisions that affect them. Everyone’s ideas are welcomed and considered, regardless of their role, seniority, or background. Nobody has to ask for permission or fight for recognition to contribute to the common goals. Sounds ideal, right? But what would it […]

Let’s dive into a few of the major themes from our conversation and share why every business leader should be thinking critically about how they vet the AI tools shaping their future. The Danger of Entrenchment: Bias in AI One of the most striking points John raised was the hidden […]
Analyst Insight: Why the Resume’s Days are Numbered – The Growing Role of Assessments in Hiring
Talent acquisition often looks backward, though it doesn’t have to – and it shouldn’t. Today, most employers evaluate job candidates through traditional means They review resumes to identify candidates whose experience matches the job description; then, they conduct interviews—often several of them led by different people—to determine whether a candidate will align with the team’s culture and approach. Sometimes, they’ll test the candidate to confirm their nuts-and-bolts knowledge. Finally, the hiring manager reviews all the notes, references, and transcripts to determine who will best fill the open role. In these scenarios, predicting a candidate’s future performance is, to a large degree, speculative since the employer can only use the candidate’s history and reputation to forecast their potential value. At best, they make an educated guess. […]

Rethinking the 40-Hour Work Week: How Plum’s Discovery Tools Can Improve Productivity
I was introduced to Plum’s Discovery Survey tool by Michelle Meehan at HR Tech last week. Michelle and I had a great conversation about the outdated work structures that are affecting both employee experience and productivity. We touched on the need to rethink the traditional 40-hour work week, which, as it approaches its 100th anniversary in 2026, is long overdue for retirement—especially in many modern professions. Propelled faster by the pandemic, changes in technological efficiency, new work-life standards, and the values of younger workers have pushed this trend along to the point that it has to be a major part of the conversation when discussing employee experience and overall business optimization. Another noteworthy factor in all of this is how businesses are turning more towards […]

Research Note: Enriching the Relationship: Insurance Brokers, Their Customers, and HCM Solution Vendors
The Changing Landscape for Small Businesses The last few years have been some of the most tumultuous in living memory, especially for small businesses trying to navigate the effects of the pandemic and a rapidly changing workforce. Generational shifts, technology innovations, and legislative changes have put enormous pressure on business leaders to adapt and respond and much of that pressure has fallen to HR leaders to manage. An explosion in complexity of compliance requirements, changing expectations from the workforce, and a need to move ever faster has left HR departments struggling to stay on top of even day-to-day tasks. As a result, business leaders are leaning more and more heavily on their existing relationship with their insurance broker for help. Brokers Today Insurance brokers often […]
#HRTechChat: 58,000 Assessments and 18 Key Learnings
As part of researching The Five Talents that Really Matter, Barry Conchie and Sarah Dalton, the co-authors, conducted and reviewed 58,000 talent assessments. Their research was global in nature, and they studied leaders at every organization level. Their findings challenge the status quo and call out for leaders, at times, things they may not have wanted to know. The key learnings offer us insight into how we have been making decisions, unaware of their impact. Understanding these insights can help us make better choices and deliver better business performance. Let ‘s look at just a few of the learnings here…and then listen to the podcast to get the whole story. For example, when we are selecting candidates, we think of ourselves as objective—looking for whom […]
#HRTechChat: What Companies Get Wrong About Selection with Barry Conchie and Sarah Dalton
With consistent churn in leadership roles at all organization levels, we have to step back and ask the question: What are we missing in our selection process? How do we continually make poor selection decisions? And why aren’t we doing better? Let us start with how we can get caught in the “likeability trap.” Barry Conchie and Sarah Dalton, in The Five Talents that Really Matter, found that likeability factors have a significant impact on how a candidate is perceived. The problem is that likeability will not correlate with whether the candidate can perform in a specific role. Throughout my career I have seen organizations select highly likeable candidates that go on to fail in the job, often within the first 6-12 months. In the […]
