Welcome to the Galaxy
The first time I saw the 365Talents Galaxy model, I thought “this is the most elegant solution I had seen” to engage people in career planning, exploring their interests, and understanding their skills. It is an individualized approach that is a compelling way to draw people into exploring career opportunities, their pathways for development, and seeing what is possible for their future within the organization.
How does the galaxy work?
What’s core to their approach is real-time skills mapping—connecting for the individual the work they are doing (or want to do) and the skills they possess. It can help the individual explore opportunities within the galaxy as well as see how adjacent jobs or work could be career possibilities for them.
From an organization perspective, the galaxy is a perfect way to expand their talent capabilities, helping them to have the right people, in the right job, to sustain and grow the business. The 365Talents galaxy helps team leaders, managers, and HR see the people, skills, and capabilities they have in the organization, giving them the flexibility to build real-time talent strategies.
The 51%-49% value proposition
It is critical in today’s talent market to have the right talent tools and infrastructure to attract and retain great talent. For organizations, having a compelling career value proposition is essential. Building a talent engine that is engaging and energizing is a 51% – 49% investment for both the individual and the organization.
The 51% is the organization’s/company’s responsibility. It includes providing people with the tools, resources, and opportunities necessary to grow and develop. Being able to offer career mobility opportunities, build skills and capabilities, and have a skills-driven infrastructure is what the organization must deliver to support its talent engine. Without this, it would be difficult for people to engage. Organizations who do not provide ways for their talent to engage in their development with the right tools and resources do not have effective talent engines capable of driving the growth of the business.
Now what about the 49%? That is the responsibility of the individual. It is unrealistic to think that the organization has all the responsibility for growing its talent—the individual has to engage in their work—invest energy in creating their career development pathways, be active and identifying and growing their skills, and being engaged in learning and developing throughout their career. That is what is great about the 365Talents galaxy—it is the pathway for employee/individual engagement because of its customer-centric design and user driven approach to skills management.
I admit. I was also fascinated with the 365Talents use of a galaxy because of what the galaxy represents in the universe. Galaxies cannot exist without gravity. In space, gravity is the force that holds galaxies together. Without gravity, galaxies would fall apart. NASA identifies gravity as an attractive or pulling force that exists between all objects in the universe. Galaxies are made up of stars, stellar remnants, and dark matter—all held together by gravity. Thats a great image for the 365Talents galaxy—it is the gravity that can hold your talent engine together—without the capability, tools, skills data, skills management, internal mobility, and flexibility, organizations cannot effectively grow the talent they need.
The 365Talents Galaxy delivers extraordinary results. First, over a million employees in 60 countries are part of the solution—in the galaxy working on their personalized career paths.
