Remote work has remained popular ever since the pandemic, making it feasible for many roles. A 2024 Gallup survey found that 28% of workers for whom it’s possible would prefer to be fully remote, and another 61% would choose a hybrid work arrangement. This adds up to a clear majority (89%) who would rather not be required to commute to an office every work day. And yet, while employees overwhelmingly prefer the logistical flexibility of remote work, it can have significant consequences for their engagement and their workplace satisfaction.
The precise work arrangement an individual would choose for reasons of convenience can lead to challenges on a deeper and arguably more impactful level in some circumstances. Poor communication, feelings of isolation, and blurred boundaries can precipitate burnout or a detachment from the workplace when at work. Employers providing remote work opportunities as either the default or an available option must be vigilant in emphasizing the employee experience. If not, they risk damaging morale and losing their most valuable asset: their people.
