A Compliance Origin Story
isolved’s origins trace back to the compliance shockwaves of COBRA-era benefits administration. The 1986 federal COBRA law (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) was enacted to address one of the many pitfalls of the American healthcare system: losing a job meant losing healthcare immediately. Accelerated by a recession in the early 1980s that led to widespread layoffs, COBRA helped close a gap during a period of high unemployment and allowed people to keep their employer-sponsored health insurance for a limited time after a “qualifying event” that would otherwise end their coverage.
In the same year COBRA became law, isolved’s early business was built around helping employers continue offering benefits while staying compliant, essentially acting as the backstop as the rules changed faster than most HR teams could adapt. Even in its naissance, isolved has been a problem-first company designed to help organizations withstand compliance shocks.
