Playground Rules for the World of Work

My colleague, Jennifer Dole, got me started this week with an extremely thoughtful piece on one of my lightning rod favorite topics—youth sports. (If you haven’t read Bob Bigelow’s book, Just Let the Kids Play, you really should). Because Jennifer and I are business and software research nerds, things immediately veered into dimensions of relevance to the Future of Work, and we had quite a bit of fun in the comments. The part that’s stuck with me today is how naturally and effectively kids organize themselves to optimize their play. If you are, like me, “of a certain age”, (and didn’t grow up burdened by uniforms, playing between the lines, being whistled at by referees, and hectored by over-zealous parents), you know how it works: […]

Betterworks Blog: Building culture and an employee-first experience at University of Phoenix

What do you do when you need to overhaul your organizational culture and improve the employee experience? For Jeff Andes, vice president of talent management at the University of Phoenix, part of the answer was to rethink and redesign the way the institution handled employee performance reviews. Through a partnership with Betterworks, Andes and his team have flipped the once dreaded annual performance review process, turning it into an engaging and efficient program he calls “Everyday Performance Management.” Independent research firm 3Sixty Insights recently spent time with Andes to understand the goals, challenges, and processes the University undertook to help move the needle on culture and deliver a contemporary performance management process that improves the employee experience and gives employees skin in the game when it comes […]

3Sixty Insights #HRTechChat with Jeff Andes, Vice President of Talent Management at University of Phoenix

“At the end of the day, we are all humans working with humans,” says Jeff Andes, vice president of talent management at University of Phoenix and my guest for this episode of the #HRTechChat video podcast. Jeff’s is a story not only of doing the hard work to do away with traditional performance management in favor of a more progressive, far more effective approach. It’s also a tale of how a large educational institution was able to return its organizational culture to one better reflecting the company’s origins in innovation and the entrepreneurial spirt. In 2017, University of Phoenix was sold to a private equity firm and became a standalone university for the first time in several decades. The change ended up presenting the proverbial […]

Research Note: Betterworks Helps University of Phoenix Replace Annual Performance Reviews With Everyday Performance Development

Old ways of carrying out performance management involve a rigidity, an inflexibility and level of formality. The limitations of standard-issue software for it, typically a part of end-to-end suites for human capital management (HCM), have generally reinforced all of this to encourage and perpetuate an ineffective, annual approach to assessing employees’ performance. The focus is top-down assessment, and the treatment of employee performance has ultimately turned into a policing exercise that people have come to dread. Historically, this has delivered little value to the company and always been at odds with the earnest intent most organizations have in assessing their employees’ performance: to promote better performance in a positive way (3Sixty Insights 3SIAG2214 – “The 3Sixty Insights Human Capital Management Themes for 2022,” January 2022). HCM Technology Report – Employ Acquires Lever, Adds Capabilities to Suite

Employ Inc. acquired Lever, a talent acquisition suite that offers ATS and CRM capabilities in one product. In a blog post, Employ Chief Marketing Officer Allie Kelly said the transaction makes Employ the largest modern provider of talent acquisition solutions. By adding Lever, she said, the company becomes home to 850 employees serving 18,000 customers. In addition, it supports 3.1 million active jobs, nearly 500 million candidates and 4.9 million hires over the past 12 months. “It makes abundant sense that Lever would join the fray with JazzHR, Jobvite and NXTThing RPO,” said Brent Skinner, co-founder of 3Sixty Insights, where he leads the firm’s HCM practice. “We believe that the pieces of the puzzle to a progressive talent acquisition suite are indeed right in front of […]
